Our Promise

We meet regularly to remember and honor the thousands of Black, Brown and indigenous people who have been killed or harmed by police violence in this country. And then we do the work to make change happen.

We are a diverse and powerful group that unites in both our belief in the equality of all people and our commitment to achieve racial justice in America. We affirm the lives of Indigenous Peoples, Latinx and Asian people, and Black people, including queer and transgender people, people with disabilities or living with a mental illness, undocumented people, and people with criminal records. We are working for a world where Black lives and historically marginalized people are no longer systematically targeted for demise.

We respect that each one of us arrives here from different places and has traveled along different paths and we remain patient with each other’s process of waking up to white privilege and systemic oppression. We are an intergenerational, multi-racial “community of practice” who share being connected to Martha’s Vineyard. A community of practice means we’re committed to doing the inner (in ourselves), inter (together) and outer (creating results) work to transform systemic racism on the island & beyond, and to make ourselves and each other better equipped to do so. We learn how to do it better as we interact regularly.

We stand for racial justice, equity and inclusion. We stand against racist behavior, microaggressions, and bigotry within our group and beyond. Our goal is to create a space where we can have open, honest conversation that is productive in our learning journey and not aggressive, racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic or harmful. We are allies in this work and we will help each other by speaking up when someone strays from this mission.

Reminders.

  • We have members who serve the group in a variety of ways. We are all volunteers and many of us invest our time and energy in creating and maintaining this space. Many hands are needed and you are invited and encouraged to contribute and make what we’re doing even more powerful.

  • Find out more about the work being done on our Angst to Action page.

  • At the gathering:

    • We ask you to mute your phones and keep your microphone muted during the vigil if you’re participating online.

    • We practice “move up/move back”. If you tend to speak often, consider leaving room for our more reluctant voices. If you tend to stay quiet, consider sharing your voice and thoughts.

    • Please be mindful of language that some might find offensive.
